Germaine was born in Igloolik in 1946 to carvers Therese Nattok and Isidore Iytok. As one of the few Inuit artists with formal art training, she has studied at various institutions such as University of Manitoba and Algonquin College. She has illustrated many children's books, designed the stage and puppets for the Inuk legend, "The Owl and the Lemming" with Co Hodeman for the National Film Board of Canada, and designed a poster for El Al Airline. Her image of an Inuit drum dancer appears on the 2000 edition of the Canadian $2 coin.
Germaine is particularly interested in female entities and concerns of her people, such as the sea goddess Sedna, creation and birth. Within Toronto, Germaine's prints are available exclusively at The Guild Shop.
